Quick free cert

Needed a free SSL Certificate for a test site. Got it from ZeroSSL. Validation was fast, maybe 10 minutes. Downloaded the files. It worked.

Good certificate, fast setup

I purchased a 1-year SSL Certificate for one of my client's websites last week. The ordering process was straightforward on their site; I found the right option quickly. Validation was done via CNAME, which took about 15 minutes after I updated the DNS records. The certificate downloaded without issues, and installing it on the server was smooth. I appreciated the clear instructions provided. So far, the site is loading securely. No need to contact support, which is always a plus. It was a good experience overall, no complaints.

Renewed my cert, easy enough

I had to renew my 90-day SSL Certificate and used ZeroSSL again. It was pretty painless. Just logged in, clicked renew, and validated the domain through email like last time. The new certificate was ready to go in a few minutes. I just swapped out the old files on my server. Didn't run into any weird problems, which is what I wanted. Felt quick and got the job done.

Okay for basic, some hiccups

I decided to try their Multi-Domain SSL for a small project. The purchase was easy enough, and I got the confirmation email right away. Validation took longer than I expected for one of the domains, I had to re-do the HTTP file validation once. It wasn't a huge deal but added a bit of extra time. The certificate itself works fine across all domains now, and I haven't had any outages. The interface for managing certificates could be a little cleaner, it felt a bit cluttered when I was looking for the renewal option. Good value for the price though.

Thinking of switching from Let's Encrypt. Is ZeroSSL actually better, or just another option?

R Rachel N. 1 month ago
I find their interface a bit more user-friendly, and they offer wildcard certs more easily than LE. Plus the ACME support is solid.

It's mostly similar functionality-wise, but ZeroSSL gives you 3 free certs instead of one, and their dashboard is a bit slicker. I wouldn't say 'better' necessarily, just different perks.

I'm looking to cover a few subdomains, like blog.mysite.com and shop.mysite.com. Can I do that with their free option or do I need to pay?

M Mike S. 1 month ago
Nah, the free plan doesn't do wildcard certs. You'll need to upgrade for that, or get individual certs for each subdomain, which is a pain.

You can get multiple free certs, one for each specific subdomain. It's not a wildcard, but it works if you don't mind managing a few of them.

Is the free certificate actually good? Like, is it legit for a small personal site or will browsers freak out?

T Todd 1 month ago
It's totally legit. Browsers trust them just fine. I've been using it for my personal blog for ages, no issues.

Yep, it's a real certificate. Only lasts 90 days, so you gotta renew it, but it works like any other SSL for basic stuff.

How fast is the validation process? I need a cert up ASAP.

T Todd Lindqvist 2 months ago
Super fast, usually. For domain validation, it's pretty much instant if you've got access to your DNS or web server to put a file up.

Mine took literally minutes for a basic domain validation, as long as you're quick with the CNAME record or HTTP file.

My current cert from another provider is expiring soon. Can I use a ZeroSSL renewal discount if I switch over?

D Dana 2 months ago
Renewal discounts are usually for existing ZeroSSL customers renewing their *own* certificates. If you're coming from somewhere else, it would be considered a new purchase for them, so you'd look for new user discounts instead.

Afaik, renewal deals are for keeping your *current* ZeroSSL plan. You'd probably qualify for a first-year discount if you're porting over from a competitor though.
